I made this song as a result of an experiment I was doing. Put a reverb send up for a guitar track, and then put a pitch shifter on the reverb. Played around with automating the pitch and I liked the results. If you just listen to the guitar track, there are a bunch of weird overtones and it starts to sound like trumpets and strings are playing in the distance.
Spacemen 3 how I love thee
It was really just meant to be an experiment, but the results reminded me of Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized, so I made a song out of it. A glorified drone really. I bounced out just the reverb signal and pitch shifted that as well, which really made it droney.
Logic’s Pitch Shift is a pretty simple affair
Did the drums with Ocean Way Drums which I got in a group buy awhile back. They sound pretty real and live to my ears. Also used AAS String Studio. I took a clean electric guitar “jazz” patch, and added fuzz, rotovibe, wah-wah, and finally a healthy dose of tape delay. Logic has a pretty awesome tape delay and I find myself reaching for it constantly.

I love to just tinker with the whole process, and figuring out what different types of effects and routing will do. That said, I am a complete novice and my desire to hear something outweighs the skills I have in finding those sounds. Fun to play though.

I think this song would be pretty cool performed live, with real instruments and real musicians. I have 2 kids and a computer, so it is what it is.

I wrote this song awhile ago; it’s about my neighborhood Echo Park. At the time it was really a pretty bad neighborhood and I had a real love/hate relationship going on with it. Things have been looking up for a little while now, and while it can still be a little rough, I’m feeling a lot better about the place. Weird mix of people.
This song was recorded using a cheap $100 Kay guitar that I bought from http:www.larkinthemorning.com. they are an awesome acoustic instruments store with a focus on obscure instruments. i would recommend getting their catalog as it makes for great gear porn. I drooled over it every night before bed for months.
I recorded this in Logic, and the mic was a MXL USB mic (since replaced), drums are the indie kit that comes with Logic and Garageband, and the synth is Automat free. It’s listed in my freeware section, so go grab it. Very nice synth. The delay was Logics Stereo Delay, and I think I used the Sample Delay to get the panning on the acoustic reverb.
This tune could use a re-mix as I did it really quick and there a few things that bother me about it (although I won’t point them out here). Think of this as urban hillbilly music.
Anything You Want
This is another song that I wrote for the RPM challenge. Wrote this one about my little girl Sophie. She is about to get a little brother within the next couple of days.
I originally meant for this song to be a kind of rock-steady reggae sort of tune, but quickly realized that my voice sounds ridiculous in that setting. I would probably have more luck rapping.
Back to the drawing board. In the end I put together a really simple drum beat on EZ Drummer (vintage kit), then added in another kit that I created in EXS24. I had downloaded some free snow and ice samples from Tonehammer over the holiday season. Lots of great samples of people walking in, and kicking snow, throwing snow, skittering rocks across frozen ponds, etc… Picked a bunch out and made a “drum kit” out of them. The ice kit just doubles the regular drum track, but the attack is totally different, I like the sound it made. They give a nice squishy/crunchy feel to the drum track. There are also some rhythmic things I did on a bitcrushed 909 sound. you’ll notice that the drums are off in spots; that’s because I did them live and liked the way the looseness felt.
The main instruments are the ukulele (purchased on impulse at guitar center for $30), the reggae bass sound in Logic, and I think I used the XILS3 synth plug-in. Reverbs were Space Designer with some EMT 250 impulse responses. Can’t remember where I got them, but there are some IRs from this floating around online. There are a couple of great vocal settings with a short reverb tail on them from this machine. I used EOS for all of the other reverb stuff.
Now the song is more like a motown song, with some slightjy off-kilter instrumentation. hope you like.
Been really into my uke lately: small, easy to grab at a moments notice, different layout than guitar so I tend to play different things. You should listen to this song, then go buy a cheap uke and record your own uke tune.
By an odd coincidence, my son who is about to be born is named Julian.
This time I put up two completely different sounding versions of the same song. The song has absolutely nothing to do with robot’s, but I love them and hadn’t put any up any pictures of them in awhile.

I’m Just Fine (fuzz version)
I wrote this song a long time ago. I played it in a band I was in at the time called Wink. We were a fuzzy, noisy pop band. We were really into the PIxies, The Beatles, Teenage Fanclub, pretty much anything with guitars and catchy melodies. And fuzz pedals.
Our guitar player Michael was really into Paul McCartney and I was into George. He probably doesn’t remember, but once we were having one of our usual Paul versus George arguments, and I showed up at a gig we were playing and he had a bumper sticker plastered on his guitar that said “I’d rather be listening to Paul.” Guess you had to be there. If you want to hear what Michael is doing these days, goggle the Light Bachwood Movement.
This song was my first experiment with tuning my guitar different than EADGBE. The guitar is tuned to an open G, which is usually used on something bluesy (Keith Richards uses it all the time). I usually played the guitar on a Salmon PInk Plastic guitar that Michael had found. I think it was an Eko. The song was written for my girlfriend at the time.
Years had gone by, and then for some reason the song popped in my head. Since we had never recorded it, I couldn’t give it a listen to see if it held up. Frustrating.
I decided to record the song over again, and ended up doing 2 different versions of it. One of them is all guitars, fuzz and early 90’s indie stylings. This is the closest to how the song was performed originally.
At one point I was doing a lot of acoustic solo shows and had played the song. I was going to record an acoustic version, but somehow I got sidetracked and ended up with something that would have been at home on an OMD record, or a John Hughes soundtrack.
So I mentioned the band Wink. Well, Brian Keats was our drummer, and Brian was a funny guy. We were all a pretty incestuous bunch: we all hung out together, our girlfriends all worked together and were friends, we barbecued a lot. I had a great time with those guys. Brian used to tell a funny story about how he played in the Misfits for awhile and Joe Walsh showed up at one of their gigs with a bunch of Hells Angels; apparently they were way harder than any of the tough skinhead guys. Brian gave me a stereo once when I didn’t have one. I remember it was housed in this really ugly glass case, and for some reason, it was so noisy that you couldn’t really listen to quiet music on it. The hissing sounds were louder than the records.
We all went to see Fugazi one time, and I think Brian lost one of his shoes. My shirt was all ripped up for some reason.
Anyways, Brian is really bad off right now. He’s suffering from cancer and it doesn’t look good. Maybe you can send a good thought his way, and while you’re at it: be grateful for the people in your life.
